First ‘Wonder Woman’ trailer out

Yesterday we got the first poster, and as expected, the first Wonder Woman trailer just premiered at Comic-Con during the Warner Bros. panel in Hall H.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Wonder Woman” hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman opens June 2, 2017.

So how does the first female-led superhero movie of the modern (ie. post-Marvel) era look? In a word, fantastic. Gadot’s Wonder Woman was a highlight of Batman v Superman, and seeing her take center stage here is terrific. The relationship between Diana and Pine’s Steve Trevor looks to be delightfully dynamic, and I love the idea of following this superhero as an outsider in World War I, not just in terms of her powers but also her feminist bent.

Visually, this thing looks stunning. It’s important that each film in the DC Extended Universe looks distinct, to avoid monotony, and Jenkins’ eye here is wonderful, throwing in plenty of slow-motion action shot with very high-speed cameras. Cinematographer Matthew Jensen‘s credits range from last year’s Fantastic Fourto Game of Thrones, but one of the best things about the palate for Wonder Woman is that the title character’s costume isn’t drained of color. It really stands out in a gorgeous way. So yeah, this is an incredibly exciting start, and now next June seems that much further off.
