Reliance Jio is going live today for everyone. Here’s how you can get a SIM and everything else you need to know

Reliance Jio has created a history in telecom industry,with its cheapest tariffs and plans already. Now the time is for it’s official launch from Sep 5. As announced by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani,the free welcome offer is open to all from tomorrow and free to use till 31 Dec 2016.



The biggest highlight that everybody got amazed was Reliance Jio’s ‘free voice calls’, even on roaming. Mukesh Ambani revealed that there will be no charges while making calls anywhere in India, and the users will only pay for mobile data.

Until Thursday, the country witnessed ‘apple’ like queues for the first time in history of telecom to get Jio’s free SIM with company’s ‘Jio Preview Offer’. Earlier Jio SIM was only available to users of a handful of OEMs. From coming monday, Reliance Jio will be available to everyone and the SIM will work on all available handsets that support VoLTE. Under the ‘Jio Welcome Offer’, all new and existing users are entitled to enjoy free calling, messaging, and data services until December 31.

Where to get Reliance Jio SIM card?

Prior to its official launch, Reliance Jio SIM cards were available at all Reliance-owned Digital Stores, Digital Xpress, and Digital Xpress Mini stores across the country. Now that the launch announcement has been made, Reliance Jio SIM should be available at your nearby telecom store as well. Jio has also introduced eKYC customer verification to activate SIM cards almost instantly when you buy them. You visit company website to know your nearest store.

What are the Documents required to get a Reliance Jio SIM card?

If you are going with eKYC process, you’ll need to produce your Aadhaar card to the get the instant activation. Just visit to any of the Reliance-owned stores near your along with your Aadhaar card. The Aadhaar card serves as both your address proof and identity proof, but if you don’t have one, you’ll have to submit other documents for these proofs, such as proof of address (POA) and proof of Identity (POI).

Alongside, you have to submit two passport-size photographs. You’ll get the Reliance Jio SIM card as soon as you complete the process of verification. Just remember to carry your original documents for verification alongside the photocopies you’ll be submitting, and make sure the photos are recent.

What is e-KYC?

First of all you should know what KYC stands for, it stands for Know Your Customer. It is a process of verifying the identity of users who have signed up for certain services such as a SIM card. It is used by most businesses at large scale for verifying the identity of clients. With e-KYC, the Aadhaar based verifying solution system part away with manual paper checks and brings the whole process online. Thus, speeding up the process and offering greater convenience to the users. It makes business more efficient in doing the verification.

Activating your Reliance Jio SIM card

After you get the SIM card, you’ll be prompted to follow the steps sent by the company to your registered email address. Since the activation and billing process is entirely online, you can get the receipts through your emails and SMS as well. Reliance Jio will also tele-verify your phone number to complete the entire activation and verification process.

VoLTE activation
To activate VoLTE, the way you make voice calls on the Reliance Jio network, you’ll need to make a call on 1977. Tele-verification process will be carried out on the same call. Don’t forget to have your Jio SIM purchase bill and other documents ready beforehand.

  1. Maximum of websites praising jio plans , but the truth is , jio cards are even not available in reliance store because of their unplanned system. I guess reality will come soon

    1. Its true that the Jio service is really bad right now. The data speeds are going down, and the plans which will come into effect next year aren’t so great either. We were expecting a more aggressive pricing but well.
      But keep in mind that Jio has not yet launched commercially. And for the cheap price of free if they can even provide a 20kbps download speed and SIM activation in 3 weeks we can’t really complain right now. Because its free right now. They’re not charging anything. This is still a beta stage perhaps. Hopefully all these mishaps will be sorted out by the time it launches commercially.
