Over the last few years, we have seen innovation slow down to a crawl in the mobile phone industry. Almost every phone launched feels like an incremental upgrade, offering maybe one or two features that really stand out from its competitors or even the previous generations. Modular design, a concept we first heard of from Google’s Project Ara was supposed to bring forth the next phase of smartphone evolution.
Unfortunately though, Project Ara was sacked. LG tried its hand at modular design with the G5, but the implementation had consumers shying away from the device. Or it could’ve been the fabulous sales of the S7 Edge. Lenovo’s Moto Mods is conceptually better than LG’s attempt, in that everyone will agree. And Lenovo is pushing the Moto Z lineup and the Moto mods with all its guns blazing. Skip the Sevens anyone?
Lenovo India on Tuesday launched the Moto Z and Moto Z Play modular smartphones in India, along with the Moto Mods.
The Moto Z offers a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels at a pixel density of 535ppi. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. It has a 5-megapixel wide angle f/2.2 front camera with LED flash along with a 13-megapixel f/1.8 rear camera with dual LED Flash and OIS. It is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage with support for up to 2TB microSD cards.
The device is backed by a 2,600mAh battery, and Motorola claims a day of battery life. Other features include fingerprint sensor, 4G LTE support, USB Type-C, and dual SIM support. The device is made from military aircraft-grade aluminium and stainless steel.

The Moto Z Play on the other hand, comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, runs on Android Marshmallow OS and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor backed by 3GB RAM. The device will come with 32GB internal memory that is expandable up to 256GB. The Z Play will sport a 16-megapixel f/2.0 rear camera with dual LED Flash and a 5-megapixel front camera with LED Flash. For connectivity, there will be USB Type-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The battery on the Z Play will be at 3,510mAh.
Currently, the Moto Z series has a speaker Mod (made by JBL), a pico-projector mod, capable of sharp images of up to 70-inches made by Motorola and a camera mod made by the legendary Hasselblad. They have also partnered up with Incipio for battery pack mods that offer extra battery backup. These mods by themselves significantly extend the capabilities of the phone they are attached to.
The JBL mod offers significantly better audio quality than what you would get out of the speakerphone. The Moto Insta-Share Projector mod turns the phone into a mini projector, great for screening photos or little vacation films. The highlight partnership, however, is with Hasselblad, where the two create a mod that offers true 10x optical zoom (25-250mm) with the resulting image maintaining its 12-megapixel resolution. It is in my opinion the only Moto Mod that actually improves the experience and justifies its price tag. If you haven’t been following, check out the Verdict on the Moto Mods introduced so far.
