Japanese tech giant Sharp, the electronics company that was purchased by contract manufacturer Foxconn for $6.2 billion last February, has unveiled a new smartphone which uses a design that could be said to be a real stunner, clutching an entirely bezel-less display.
Sharp has been around for a long, long time, and they have been releasing various products, ranging from TVs and smartphones to smartphone displays. This isn’t the tech giant’s first bezel-less smartphone though. The company’s IGZO mobile panels are considered to be amongst the best in the industry, and Sharp had managed to intrigue the public by releasing some interesting ‘bezel-less’ smartphones in the past like the Aquos 305SH in 2014 and it was touted back then as the world’s first bezel-less mobile phone.
Using the IGZO technology that carries up to 1000ppi, the Corner R features a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920. That works out to a 425ppi. The display makes up 90% of the front panel with virtual buttons underneath. There is no word on when the device will be offered to the public. A full list of specs was not revealed.
Sharp’s devices have been very limited in terms of availability outside of Japan, which is a shame, initial reactions to some of the company’s smartphones have been more than positive in the past.
This concept smartphone was introduced at the CEATECH 2016 technology expo in Sharp’s homeland, Japan. I’d love to see Sharp bring this smartphone into the mainstream market outside of Japan because we need innovative smartphone designs that push the boundaries and we don’t have enough of them.
