The Chinese electronics giant Vivo unveiled the Vivo Xplay 6, its new flagship today, and I have to say, it ticks all the right boxes – at least on the hardware side.
There is no denying that this is a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge clone barring the back which is more like an iPhone 7. Vivo calls the antenna design on Xplay6 as U-type antenna dome with 1.8mm narrow lines but we know better don’t we. However, it’s much cheaper and feels flagship-ish.
The handset sports a gorgeous dual-curved edge screen measuring 5.46-inches with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. Judging from the press release photos, Vivo seems to have adopted a Samsung-esque edge toolbar where presumably you’d be able to pin your favourite apps and contacts etc.
Under the hood you will find a Snapdragon 820 chipset with a quad-core CPU, and the Adreno 530 GPU. 6GB of RAM is inside along with 128GB of internal storage.
On the back, you will find a 12-megapixel camera, which comes with a Sony IMX362 sensor, 4-axis OIS, and an aperture of f/1.7. Underneath, there is a secondary 5-megapixel module, which according to Gizmo China, will help add a shallow depth of field effect. The front facing camera is a 16-megapixel shooter – a trend that we are starting to see in Android devices.
It has a fingerprint sensor placed on the home button. The Vivo Xplay6 has a bigger 4080mAh battery with Quick Charging support. As of the software, the phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow based company’s own FunTouch OS 3.0. Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi 802.11 ac and GPS. Audio nerds can relax, Vivo continues to support the use of 3.5mm headphone jack, which bucks the general trend. Vivo Xplay6 comes with ES9038 + 3xOPA1622 audio chip for Hi-FI audio output.
So yeah, it is indeed flagship hardware, packed in a body clearly inspired by more than one flagships and what’s even more baffling is that Vivo managed to pack all of this into a device that is merely 5.2mm thin!
The Vivo Xplay 6 will go on sale via Vivo’s retail and online channels starting on December 12th. It is priced at 4498 Yuan that is the equivalent of $655 USD or ₹44,500 INR. Vivo has not introduced Xplay series in India and Xplay6 is unlikely to land here anytime soon
But earlier this week, the company did launch its selfie-centric smartphone in the Indian market, Vivo V5. Priced at ₹17,980, the phone comes with a 20 MP front-facing camera. Another variant of the phone, dubbed Vivo V5 Plus, is also going to launch in January 2017.
