Is this the Xperia XZ 2017?

As Sony is working on new devices to unleash in 2017, one of those devices could be particularly exciting. The Japanese tech giant could launch an edge-less handset in 2017, presumably dubbed as the Xperia XZ 2017. Sony looks set to continue its OmniBalance design language into 2017 if this latest rumoured leak turns out to be true.

This picture leaked online is said to come of a gold front panel of an upcoming Sony Xperia device.

The leak went online via Slashleaks, and we’re calling this unknown device Xperia XZ 2017, since that is what Slashleaks called it. There’s no information to go with the image, so we have to make some assumptions based purely on what we can see, which isn’t a great deal, especially since the image is quite blurry.

What it does clearly show is a virtually edgeless display, although the top and bottom bezels are pretty big, so typically Sony.. There’s clear Sony branding, which is a good start, a front-facing camera to the left and sensors on the right.

While many manufacturers have used the same name for their devices over a few generations, Sony has never done that, so it is unlikely they will keep the same name even if this alleged device is a successor to the Xperia XZ.

There’s some talk about the possibility of a back facing fingerprint scanner or an on-screen fingerprint scanner because there is no indication of any physical keys in this image. Since this is allegedly just a front panel, it doesn’t seem quite right to talk about the placement of physical buttons because they’re nowhere to be seen.

Most likely though, there will be a camera button on the lower right side, volume rockers not very higher up on the same side, and a power button featuring a fingerprint scanner, (at least outside the US).

If you like your Xperia in gold, we can say from this image that there will be a gold version of the device at least.

There’s no official word on when the new XZ will be released, but fingers are pointing to an MWC reveal as opposed to CES, although previous rumours have suggested the company will in fact unveil at new 4K Xperia smartphone at the show in Las Vegas.
