Yesterday, Evan Blass took to twitter leaking some specs for the Samsung Galaxy S8+, the 6.2 inch behemoth with physical dimensions identical to last year’s Samsung flagships. If you liked the Galaxy S8+ specs, you will definitely love the specs for the smaller, Galaxy S8. This is a smaller flagship done right. The specs are almost identical and yes, the Galaxy S8 has dual cameras as well.
This leak comes from TechnoBuffalo which claims to have obtained it from an unknown source and if they decided to come out with this on their website, it’s safe to assume they are pretty confident about it, being a reputable publication. According to the leak, the Galaxy S8 will have a 5.8 inch display, as rumoured however taking into account the rounded corers it comes down to 5.6 inches. It is a QuadHD+ Super AMOLED panel exactly the same as the Galaxy S8+, except the smaller size.
Apart from that difference in screen size, the Galaxy S8 and the S8+ are essentially the same devices including 12-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front cameras, 64GB of storage, microSD support, 4GB of RAM, and an IP68-rated body. Too good to be true? It is also supposed to include an iris scanner, wireless charging support, Samsung Pay and earphones tuned by AKG.
Not mentioned in the leak however, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ do have another difference, battery size. With bigger screens comes a bigger battery, so it shouldn’t be surprising. The Galaxy S8 is rumoured to contain a 3000 mAh battery whle its larger sibling could be powered by a larger 3500 mAh battery.
Last year’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge also had essentially the same differences, with identical specs. However, one still had an edge over the other. That won’t be the case this year and the two flagships are more identical than ever.
The spec sheet also doesn’t mention the processor, but it’s likely that the US versions of the phones will ship with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835 processor, while some international models will probably have Samsung’s new Exynos 9 Series 8895 chip.
According to the latest rumours, both the devices are set to launch on April 21.
I am a person who does not like the craze for larger devices, larger screens, sure why not. And therefore I am really excited to see Samsung fit a 5.8 inch display on a form factor that is usually associated with around 5 inch displays. That’s about big enough for me. Here’s hoping this leak turns out to be true and we finally have a mini flagship done right.
