Google Pixel 2 might drop the headphone jack

Who would’ve predicted that the life of the 3.5mm headphone jack would become a hot topic by 2016 and would continue till 2017. When Apple ditched the jack there has been an ongoing debate for and against the move. Apple certainly wasn’t the first company to do so but it was the first company rumoured to do so. Which is why LeEco and Moto decided to get on the train before the engine is attached. Now it seems Google Pixel 2 might drop the headphone jack too.

Enthusiasts were afraid OEMs like Samsung would follow behind Apple however so far, none of the devices by any major manufacturers except HTC didn’t have a headphone jack. The LG G6 has it, and LG is a company known to stick – for quite a while – with features everyone else thinks are outdated, such as a removable battery. Sony’s latest Xperia XZs and XZ Premium have it too. The company  has already said they won’t be jumping in on the jack-less bandwagon anytime soon. We know from various leaks that the Samsung Galaxy S8 also has the headphone jack.

The idea that Google might be the first to line up behind Apple of all the other OEMs was something that probably didn’t cross our minds. It certainly didn’t cross mine. But 9to5Google is reporting that the next generation of Pixel smartphones might drop the headphone jack according to internal documents seen by them.

According to an internal Google document seen by 9to5Google, the Mountain View company’s next-generation Pixel flagship will forgo the headphone jack.

It is rather ironic because the presence of the headphone jack was one of the key advertising points for the Google Pixel. It is also ironic since Google was listening to the consumers on how to improve the Pixel further for 2017, and I am pretty sure dropping the headphone jack wasn’t something users would have suggested.

The website says the fact that Google might ditch the jack was evident in the language of the document however, they weren’t able to verify this rumour with multiple sources. So if this is true, this would mean that Google has been considering this for a while now.

“3.5mm headphone jack satisfyingly not new”

Which side of the headphone jack war are you on? Would you like a thinner device at the expense of the headphone jack? Are you fine with how thin devices with headphone jack are today? Sound off in the comments below.

  1. Why not keep the headphone jack? It makes sense and other than the Moto Z which is a little over 5mm thin and too thin to include a headphone jack, most other devices are 7mm or thicker and can easily accommodate a headphone jack. The iPhone 7 ditched the headphone jack despite using largely the same case (and same thickness) as the iPhone 6. It’s handy and doesn’t necessitate the need for a dongle. I think it’s just cost in the end. It costs a bit less not to have a headphone jack, but not that much less….

    1. Agreed. Ditching the headphone jack is Apple trying to be “innovative” and “brave” like they were back in the day with Steve Jobs, ditching floppy disks. But there’s a difference between Jobs and Cook and it is more evident now than ever.
