Over the last few years, we have seen innovation slow down to a crawl in the mobile phone industry. Almost every phone launched feels like an incremental upgrade, offering maybe one or two features that really stand out from its competitors or even the previous generations. Modular design, a concept we first heard of from Google’s Project Ara was supposed to bring forth the next phase of smartphone evolution.
Unfortunately though, Project Ara was sacked. LG tried its hand at modular design with the G5, but the implementation had consumers shying away from the device. Or it could’ve been the fabulous sales of the S7 Edge. Lenovo’s Moto Mods is conceptually better than LG’s attempt, in that everyone will agree.
