The movie Her (a good movie by the way) painted a future where AI assistants are ubiquitous but it failed to mention just how many of them there will be. To say that the race for digital AI assistants has started, would only be stating an obvious fact. Apple has Siri, Google has Now, and also the Assistant, Microsoft has Cortana, Amazon has Alexa, Samsung is rumoured to be working on Bixby and now it appears Nokia has set sights on building its own artificial intelligence assistant which might be called by the name ‘Viki’. Former mobile phone giant Nokia has announced it is suing Apple, accusing the iPhone maker of violating 32 technology patents. This happened a day after the Cupertino based tech giant sued two patent licensors and accused the Finish communications giant of colluding with them.
On Tuesday, Apple filed suit against Acacia Research and Conversant Intellectual Property Management, both of whom license patents, for allegedly engaging in anticompetitive behaviour with Nokia to “extract and extort exorbitant revenues unfairly” from Apple and other smartphone makers.

Nokia smartphones are poised for a comeback after former managers at the Finnish company licensed the handset brand from Microsoft and struck up partnerships with Google and phone manufacturer Foxconn. Nokia was once the world’s dominant cellphone maker but missed the shift to smartphones and then chose Microsoft’s unpopular Windows operating system for its “Lumia” range.

Nokia’s return to smartphones is probably one of the most awaited moments that will happen in 2017, and it could under the right circumstances be bigger than the Galaxy S8 or the 10th anniversary iPhone. Rumours about Android powered Nokia phones have been around long before Nokia had to sell off it’s mobile division to Microsoft and the rumours didn’t die even after the company sold out.
After announcing its plans to return to tablets and phones back in May, today, Finnish company HMD Global has officially announced its entry into the mobile market with Nokia-branded phones. The first Nokia-branded Android smartphones will be available in the first half of 2017, HMD said in a press statement on Thursday. Nokia’s return to the smartphone industry is expected to kick off in late February with an announcement at MWC 2017 in Barcelona. Some specs for Nokia’s new Android flagship leaked yesterday and now a certain Nokia Pixel has surfaced on Geekbench. The Nokia Pixel was apparently benchmarked earlier this month.
That said, I’m pretty sure that will not be the official name of the device when it does come out. This Nokia Pixel looks to be a lower end device though as its specsheet suggests. Continue reading ““Nokia Pixel” and a couple other lower end Nokia devices leak on Geekbench”
Fans have been dreaming of an Android flagship branded under a Nokia logo and recent developments all suggest that it is more than likely to happen in the first few months of 2017. In fact, the first phones the Finnish company is expected to unveil after the Microsoft fiasco are most likely going to be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2017, in late February.
There certainly will be more than just one smartphone that Nokia will announce at the MWC and one of them at least will be a high end flagship according to new rumours arising out of China. Continue reading “Upcoming Nokia flagship specs leaked”
