Since it’s launch last year, Android nougat has struggled to gain market distribution just like any other Android version has over the past years. The Google Pixel had it from the start and several devices from the likes of HTC, Motorola, Sony and LG have had their nougat updates as well yet by the end of January, Nougat 7.0 and 7.1 combined were only present on a mere 1.2% of Android devices. Google Assistant is coming to your Android device soon. Yes, no root, no Gapps. That is if you have a device that runs on Android 6.0 and above. The rollout to Android devices running Marshmallow and above will open up the Google Assistant to about 30 percent of Android users.

Google started rolling out Android 7.1.2 Nougat public beta to all compatible devices just a few days ago. One of the compatible devices, the Nexus 5X is receiving a much requested feature: a swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to reveal notifications. There was much controversy back in November over why last generation’s Nexus devices were not receiving the ‘Swipe for notifications’ gesture. Despite the Pixel featuring the exact same fingerprint sensor, Android 7.1 did not bring over the useful feature to the Nexus 5X and 6P. Starting today Android 7.1.2 is rolling out to Android Beta Program members. At this time, we don’t know much about Android 7.1.2, only that it’s an “incremental maintenance release focused on refinements, so it includes a number of bugfixes and optimizations, along with a small number of enhancements for carriers and users.” Continue reading “Android 7.1.2 beta available now, Nexus 6 and 9 won’t officially get it”
The Xperia Z5 family from Sony – Z5, Z5 compact, Z5 Premium – were the next in line for the Android Nougat update list of Sony after the Xperia X and X compact which received the update after Xperia X Performance and Xperia XZ . The OTA has started rolling out to some Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium users bearing the version number 32.3.A.0.372 and a size of 1.3 GB, so make sure to download over Wi-Fi (or update through the Xperia Companion on your PC).

Just over three weeks ago, Google began rolling out Android 7.1.1 Nougat to supported devices. Google confirmed back then that the Nexus 6 will eventually receive the update, but wasn’t included in the list of devices being updated then. The Nexus 6 is the oldest still-supported Nexus device and users have been not-so-patiently awaiting Android 7.1.1.
Apparently the delay was due to a bug that seems to have appeared at the last minute, at least that’s what Google says.
Following a brief developer preview, Android 7.1.1 is now available for Nexus and Pixel devices as previously rumoured. Google has just published the Android 7.1.1 Nougat factory images and OTA files for a couple of Nexus and Pixel devices. If you don’t own a Pixel or Pixel XL smartphone, you will get some of the features that were only available for these devices since they were launched with Android 7.1 Nougat right out of the box. Did Sony’s roadmap for rolling out the Nougat update sound too good to be true? It kind of was since October came and went, and so did November and yet the company couldn’t manage to roll out a public preview of the latest OS build for even one of its two flagships. But just on the last day of November, that is yesterday, Sony began rolling out the Nougat update to unlocked versions of Xperia X Performance.
Just a day after, Sony’s second flagship, the slightly beefier and prettier Xperia XZ is reportedly receiving the update in many parts of the world. Continue reading “Sony’s second flagship Xperia XZ receives the sweet Nougat update”
Sony today started rolling out an official Android 7.0 Nougat update to the Xperia X Performance, almost one month after releasing a Nougat beta program for the same device. The Sony Xperia X Performance is the first in the Xperia lineup of smartphones to begin getting the over-the-air update to Android 7.0 Nougat.
